While Sunday proved to be a very big day for the STN Sports Books, one bettor had a Monday night to remember after hitting a 10-team parlay and won nearly $200,000. The bettor, who is known to oddsmakers, hit eight legs of the parlay rather easily. The $250 ticket was bailed out when the Raiders had a miracle cover on Sunday, making everything come down to the Dallas Cowboys -1.5.
The ‘Boys beat the Chargers 20-17 on Monday, netting the guest a casual $199,750 payday. 10 teams. Odds of 799-1. Even our ridiculously comfortable hotel beds don’t have that many covers!
With all that in mind, let’s quickly look back at the past week in sports and peek at what’s ahead on the STN Sports App and at the Station Casinos Race and Sports Books…
Big Wins
In order to keep the day profitable, oddsmakers knew they’d need some underdogs to get covers or outright wins on Sunday, and their wish was granted thanks to the losses by the 49ers and Eagles, as well as a cover by the Giants over the Bills. At STN Sports Books, 91% of the tickets bet on 49ers/Browns game sided with San Francisco; 87% of the tickets bet on Giants/Bills game sided with Buffalo; 85% of the tickets bet on Eagles/Jets game sided with the Philly.
“It was by far our best Sunday of the year,” said Chuck Esposito, Station Casinos’ Race and Sports Book Director. “What’s interesting, though, is that we lost more games than we won. It’s just that we won the extreme marquee games. Most of the games went the guest’s way.” Considering the ticket counts on the 49ers, Bills and Eagles, guests were probably feeling more emo than the crowd at this weekend’s When We Were Young Festival.
That Raiders Ending Though…
Like a Britney Spears memoir, oddsmakers are hoping to turn the page on the bad beat they suffered at Allegiant Stadium. With time winding down in the game, the hometown Las Vegas Raiders were up 19-17 on the Patriots. As the line closed at 3 points, New England backers — which included STN Books — were happily ready to collect their winnings. However, with under two minutes left, New England quarterback Mac Jones was sacked in the end zone for a safety, giving Las Vegas a 21-17 win. A miracle cover, especially for one particular bettor with a 10-team parlay!
“That was a huge swing not only with us, but I would think industrywide for Raiders bettors,” Esposito said. At STN Books, 75% of the tickets bet on that game were on the Raiders -3. “It was a dramatic financial swing in favor of the guests. Thank God we were able to win the other bigger games of the night. It would have been a catastrophic outcome if we lost the Raiders and others games with high tickets counts,” Esposito said.
How Low Can You Go?
Over the past few years, it seems that games have been soaring over like a Janet Airlines plane (look it up.) That’s not the case this year, as lower scoring games seem to be the norm. In Week 6, unders went 12-3.
“The league seems to be very, very quarterback-driven and offensive line-driven, and you look at how many young quarterbacks are in the league right now and how many offenses are really struggling and I think that’s a big piece of why you’re seeing all these unders,” Esposito said.
The Best of the Rest
With so much uncertainty regarding the injury status of key players, there’s been some trepidation with early betting on next week’s slate of NFL games. Is Trevor Lawrence going to play? How about Justin Fields? Christian McCaffrey or Deebo Samuel? But, there has been some early sharp play on the Patriots and Steelers.
Rebelling
Don’t look now, but the UNLV Rebels are almost bowl-eligible, and they’re putting money in guest’s pockets. The local school is not only 5-1 in the win-loss column, but they’re actually undefeated against the spread. Bettors have noticed. “On individual games, our Rebel football handle is probably the most that I’ve seen in over 10 years,” Esposito said. “We used to have very small decisions on the UNLV games. I can tell you that from the business side of it, it’s usually not a good thing for us when UNLV wins.” The Rebels are money this year.
World Series Awaits
We’re not ones to gloat, but let’s talk about the Philadelphia Phillies… Um, told you so! A few weeks ago, Espositocalled the Phillies the “dark horse” of the playoffs, and boy was he right. Philadelphia looks like a team on a mission. They’ve destroyed Atlanta and are manhandling Arizona like Kevin Spacey at a bar. And bettors are backing the boys from the City of Brotherly Love. At one point in the season, Philadelphia had 40-to-1 World Series odds, so they weren’t exactly highly feared. The Rangers, who had World Series odds of 60-to-1 at one point, are also stunning the world with a collection of road wins.
“The Rangers have been terrific for us. The Phillies have not,” Esposito said. “Overall the baseball postseason has been really good.” With the Braves, Dodgers and Orioles all out, that added up to wins for the house. Although the STN Books are in a good position liability-wise with all the final four teams, they do best with an Astros/Diamondbacks World Series. “The Phillies and Rangers would be the least advantageous matchup from our side of the counter,” Esposito said.
